About Us

At R.I.S.E. Music (Roots in Sound & Education), our purpose is to expand the opportunities available to children in Prince George's County through instrumental music.

Instrumental music provides cognitive and personal benefits as well as being a gateway to success in higher education.

Our personal experience has informed our approach.  We are a mother-son duo from Prince George’s County, Maryland.  We have had the amazing fortune to come across amazing music opportunities  along our journey, and witnessed the positive impact of being a musician on math skills,  technology skills, problem solving, team work, and self-esteem.  However, we also noticed Prince George’s County’s under-representation in the competitive state bands. With family residing in this county for over five decades, we know Prince Georgeans to be replete with talent so wondered about the barriers to musical success and what we could do to help other children have an uplifting experience with instrumental music as well.

Keys to success include:

  • Child interest in instrumental music and motivation to try something new, which can be accomplished through exposure and mentoring,

  • Caregiver awareness of the many benefits of instrumental music both within and outside of the band room,

  • Access to instruments and private lessons, which can be costly and time consuming without sufficient resources, and

  • A strong sense of community within the world of music, with representation from people who they can relate to.

R.I.S.E

Our family has made sacrifices to provide this exposure, but many families do not have these opportunities, leading to the loss of downstream educational and personal benefits that could have come from participating in instrumental music.

At R.I.S.E. Music, our purpose is to promote the path to instrumental music and success in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math by:

  1. Facilitating connection between prospective students and music instructors in and near Prince George’s County, Maryland.

  2. Motivating developing middle school instrumentalists through exposure to instruments and successful high school musicians.

  3. Raise funds for lesson, instrument, and transportation scholarships to support the needs of talented middle and high school students in Prince George’s County, in hopes that this collective investment will yield them educational opportunities beyond what they initially imagined.

At R.I.S.E. Music, our vision is for Prince George’s for youth from this area to have all of the educational opportunities that instrumental music can provide. These educational opportunities would eventually bring wealth into Prince George’s, enriching our communities.
